Hello all!
Take a look at what we've been up to.
Swim to Survive was so much fun!

In Math, we practised our newly acquired grade 3 skills and concepts in patterning. A shout out to Mrs. G for the fun vertical learning activity. Ask your child to explain what they were doing in the hall.

In Language, we are in the middle of gathering all the necessary tools needed to begin to write a DESCRIPTIVE paragraph. We've read plenty of books and have compared the mental images we've created, we've learned about ADJECTIVES and we've even played around with SMILIES (not to be confused with smiles:) Ask your child what a SIMILE is.

Check down below to see what the class did for Art. We almost had an epic fail! A shout out to Mrs. Alexander for directing me to the right type of paint here.

Mrs. Sherwin showed our class how a student can get on to SORA. Ask your child to show you how you can sign out an e-book on their account. A paper copy of the instructions went home in your child's agenda on Friday.

A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER............
  • Spirit Week is this coming week. This note was also in your child's agenda on Friday.
  • Math assessments are coming home in your child's homework books. Please take a moment to review, sign and return them in your child's book as we do with the homework by Friday.
  • Swim to Survive is this Tuesday. Same routine as last time.
  • Progress reports go home this Wednesday. Interviews are November 14th.
Have a great week. I know we will!

A short week after the Thanksgiving Day long weekend but a busy one!

In Math, we continue to dig deeper with the focus on looking at visual patterns and writing a pattern rule based on the attributes that are changing.

Our goal was to change and explain 2 changing attributes in our patterns but many of the children were able to create and extend visual patterns with 3 changing attributes. Ask your child what another word for 'direction' may be.
Here is a game taken from Math Up that you can play with your child to reinforce what we have been learning about patterns.

Talking about attributes in Math goes hand in hand about talking about attributes in Language. We have directed our focus on an important reading strategy called VISUALIZATION. We have been using our 5 senses to talk about adjectives.
This is a work in progress. More to come soon!

A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER..........
  • Swim to Survive this coming Tuesday October 22nd. Please ensure your child has a bathing suit, towel and a plastic bag to bring his/her wet stuff back to school in.
  • Subway and Pizza lunches start on November 5th.

Hi,
Use these visuals from our past week as a conversation starter with your child. Get your child to explain what is going on in the photo and why that learning concept is so important.
In Math, our class worked with sets of terms to determine the pattern rule.

Here is a link to the patterning skills and concepts we've been tackling in Math Up

In Language, the students recounted an event that happened to them over the weekend. This organizer was glued into their anchor chart dictionary so they can reference it after our class anchor charts come down as we move on to another type of writing.

We did an experiment in Science to see which shape is stronger- a square or a triangle? Ask your child what their result was.

We started our health unit on Healthy Eating. Many are already experts thanks to some good teaching and modeling happening at home. Ask your child how fruits and vegetables are good for our bodies and how many servings does a child their age need to have in a day.

Our time in the Learning Commons on Wednesday morning is evolving. Take a look at all the cool examples of deep learning happening thanks to Mrs. Sherwin. The students are so engaged that some forgot to take out books before our time ran out!

Our class explored what a horizon line is so that we could do a Fall scene with a definite foreground, middle ground and background. See if you can pick out your child's masterpiece.

A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER......
  • Many children are handing in incomplete homework at the end of the week. Can I please ask you to ensure your child has done their homework correctly. A reminder that there is a sheet on the inside cover of your child's homework book that has the few easy steps they need to follow. This is the sheet a parent signed at the beginning of the year. Once they have done those few steps, please, if you can, take a moment to see if they did it correctly. The book is a means of practising skills and not assessing them. If you see your child is not using an upper case letter to start a sentence or is not writing a complete sentence, give them feedback for your child to correct their mistake. I can do this generally as a class but the feedback that you can give your child is individualized and immediate. It packs a more powerful punch.
  • Please ensure your child's swimming forms are brought back to school. I am still missing a bunch. Our class goes swimming October 22, 29th, and November 5th in the afternoon.
  • Popcorn Day is this Friday. Please stay tuned to your child's agenda, the school website and School Messenger for more details.

A busy week!
In Math, we moved onto another unit dealing with PATTERNS. Before we move forward, we needed to review what we recalled from last year and we needed to understand what some new vocabulary was.

Ask your child what were the 3 math manipulatives (tools) we used this past week.
The link below is a resource for parents from our Math Up program. Please take the time to review the essential learning from the unit.

In Language the children continue to see, read about and write RECOUNTS. Below, the students are understanding what past tense verbs are and how a writer decides how a past tense verb is written.

Below is an example of a good deeds reward winner enjoying her reward. Ask your child to explain this to you.

And.......our class pushed over 100 marbles by receiving compliments by educators other than Mme Marta and myself. Your children truly shine at school! Below, are the ideas and the vote that was taken to see what the class reward would be.

A FEW THINGS TO REMEMBER.....

  • Because of the short week leading into the Thanksgiving weekend, there will be no homework given out this week.
  • Pizza and Subway lunch orders are being accepted on-line. Consult the school website on how to register if you have not already done so or contact the school for any assistance needed.
  • I Walk to School is this Tuesday October 8th.
  • Thanksgiving Day Mass is this Tuesday October 8th @ 1:15 pm in the gym. All are welcome.
  • A reminder that our class goes swimming on October 22nd, October 29th and November 5th. All forms need to be handed in by Tuesday October 15th.
Have a great week! I know we will.
